Sometimes I hear people talk about self-care as a selfish or an egoistic thing. Almost like you can´t do things for others AS WELL as taking care of yourself.
Like, can you be an activist and changemaker in the world with healthy boundaries? Say no to the things you don´t feel like doing and even turn off your phone to stroll around and be totally unproductive for a day or two?
My answer to this is, of course, a very loud and clear YEEES!
Since I mostly work with women (and I´m a woman myself), I often think about this from a women´s perspective. I believe that many of us women have been very good at taking care of others, but maybe not as good at taking care of ourselves,
You just have to take a look at stress-related disease, right now many women suffer from burnout and exhaustion. Ambitious women who´ve been doing the right thing, they´ve worked hard, and they´ve been high achievers in many areas of life.
Ambitious women with dreams and hopes, now with just about enough energy to get out of bed each morning. What a waste.
We are often the unpaid project managers in our families, the coffee makers at or offices, the ones who take responsibility for the well being of those around us. And as the #metoo campaign shows - even the shoulder to cry on for those who´ve offended us or sexually harassed us.
It´s a sad, sad thing.
The woman as a caretaker for EVERYONE except for herself.
So it´s about time now, ladies.
It´s about time that we allow ourselves to take better care of ourselves to meet our own needs. Many things have to change, structures need to fall, but until then - please don´t feel guilty for putting yourself first, for not being productive or for saying no when you don´t feel like doing things.
So, back to the bottom line.
Is self-care selfish?
No, it´s not selfish.
It´s absolutely necessary.
So what can you do to take better care of yourself this week?
PS. Not ALL women will relate to this.
PS 2. Yes, SOME men also need more self-care in their lives.
PS 3. It can be great to work hard, be productive, achieve your goals and be a support to those you care for. As long as you are one of those people you care about too.
