Have you ever been in a situation when you find it´s hard to define yourself and what you do? You know when that short elevator pitch feels far away, and no matter how hard you try to define yourself, you feel forced to leave important things out.
Well, congratulations - maybe that box is just too small for you!
I´ve struggled my whole life to do, and work with, just ONE thing, ONE thing that I could be really good at and work with for...let´s say, the rest of my life. And guess what? It has never worked for me at all.
Of course, we have to make choices and prioritize, and if we do everything at once we risk to lose our focus, we can feel scattered or even risk burnout. It´s impossible to do it all at once, and that is not what I´m suggesting either.
What I´m suggesting is the opposite.
When you have many different jobs, passions, projects or interests, you need to be a master at focusing, planning, and owning both your time and your schedule. For some periods you might even have to do just ONE thing, to cultivate, build skills and dig deeper.
But to change between projects, interests, and skills can also be a dynamic and fun way of living. It allows you to stay curious and explore the different areas you´re interested in. In many ways, it can make you feel whole - when you release the pressure of narrowing yourself down to ONE work identity or ONE interest or ONE personality you can be free. Free to allow yourself to change and grow at your own pace and in whichever direction your intuition takes you. To open up to opportunities that expands you as a person.
I have always felt that my different jobs and projects are connected, they all come from a desire to inspire, connect, create and communicate. It can be dancing, writing a blog post, a song, a concept for a show, teaching young people creativity or coaching a person in stress-management and health - even when I worked in cafés and restaurants, my drive and motivation was always the same.
I love people. I love creative expression. I love to inspire people to get in connection with themselves. I love service. That´s it.
But if your the type who´s doing many different things it will be harder for people to define you, you´re not so easily boxed. And if you hear people talk about it as if it is a problem (for them), you might think that something is wrong with you. But hey, we´re all different, and some of us just can´t stop ourselves from exploring different areas, and that´s got to be okay too.
I think this is actually changing and becoming more accepted nowadays, many people have a lot of different jobs and change careers and professions a few times during a lifetime.
And now there´s also an excellent word for it: multipotentialite.
First time I heard about it was in a TED-talk with Career coach Emelie Wapnick, and it made me look at my own career path in a totally different way.
What if you´re not bad at making choices? What if you are not just a drifter or a seeker? You are a MULTIPOTENTIALITE!
Whatever term you are using for your personality, I think it´s time to make that box bigger. Or why not throw it out the window for good, and let people be all that they desire to be and more!
Wishing you a great day!
